The United States Mint began producing the “Statehood Quarter” series in 1999. The ten-year project was completed in 2008 with the Alaska and Hawaii quarters. The Alaska Mint is producing a one ounce .999 fine silver replica of the State Quarter. Pictured above right, you might agree it is an appealing design. (Click on images to enlarge)

Featured is a grizzly bear in a stream with a freshly caught salmon in its mouth. In the background is a waterfall. Also included in the Alaska design are the inscriptions “The Great Land” and “Alaska 1959”. An item that many people might interpret as “just another star on a U.S. coin” (located to the right of the word Alaska), actually represents the North Star – which is so prominent in the state’s winter sky.

Governor Sarah Palin chose this image from 850 design submissions.

98% of the U.S. grizzly bear population is found in Alaska.

The back of this medallion (above left) is a beautiful engraving of the Alaskan wilderness – Land of the Midnight Sun.

'''It is important to note THIS MEDALLION IS NOT A LMITED EDITION. It does NOT have a serial number.''' Consequently its issue price is below that of the State or Iditarod series medallions. We are offering it here (contrary to our mission of focusing on collectable medallions with appreciation potential) strictly as a novelty piece – an enlarged version of the U.S. mint’s state quarter. It will make a nice gift for anyone who has an interest in the state quarter series or as a display piece. It is one of the best looking unlimited mintage medallions the mint has produced.

It is one ounce of .999 fine silver and the price is $54.95.
